- W4301663119 abstract "AIDS education campaigns, which tend to be practical and direct, assume people have viable choices in sexual relationships, but they do not. Cultural, social, political, and economic factors restrict their control, including protecting themselves against AIDS. People in developing countries often must leave their families for long periods of time for employment, which makes them lonely; so they seek sexual affairs. In Thailand, poverty and underdevelopment force rural families to send young women to the cities to earn money for the families, but the cities already have many unemployed and unskilled people, so the women resort to prostitution. Girls often have sex with married men who provide them essentials. HIV appears to be more prevalent among women of low status. 82% of female AIDS cases in the world are found in Africa, where women have little control over their lives. They cannot even mention safe sex to regular partners without being rejected or battered. This is especially a problem for wives of migrant workers or truckers. The AIDS pandemic has illustrated how family planning programs have left out men in contraceptive decision making. Thus, family planning and AIDS education programs must reverse this trend to convince men to use condoms. In developing countries, just 3% of couples of childbearing age use condoms. Condoms are often linked with prostitution, casual affairs, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. In South Africa, many Blacks think Whites promote condom use to control black population growth. In one AIDS project in South Africa, older women teach young girls about sex to eliminate harmful taboos. AIDS has forced public health and education professionals to come up with an approach to sex education which examines relationships and acknowledges the imbalances of power between men and women, e.g., assertiveness training courses in Swaziland." @default.
