- W4301801199 abstract "T'ang Studies 10-11 (1992-93) Sui-T'ang Studies in Japan in 1990* TSUJI MASAHIRO itlEiW Translated by John Lee ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA Recent trends in the study of Sui-T'ang history may be characterized , on the one hand, by the flourishing of research that utilizes the so-called wen-wu x!f?lJ sources, especially documents and rubbings recently brought to light, and, on the other hand, by a growth in institutional history whose topics are not limited to state or power structures. We might infer from these trends that solidly empirical studies, which try to verify every source of information, have been on the rise. But the same trends have also produced studies lacking a clear perspective and containing nothing more than a description of source materials. Research on documentary evidence certainly promises to open a new vista on the history of this period. A number of studies, taking us beyond the level of earlier understanding, have appeared. The problem, however, is how to bring together the facts made clear by these studies. Let us hope that new perspectives on the Sui-T'ang period might eventually be built on the basis of solidly empirical studies. Having indulged myself in wishful thinking without due regard to my own deficiencies, I shall now briefly discuss individual studies, grouped in several areas. Documentary Research. Seven out of the thirteen papers in the seventh issue of the research reports of the T'ang History Society Jaf ft 3ElifF ~ ff, titled Historical Research on the Earlier Documents of East Asia (Higashi Ajia komonjo no shiteki kenkyii), deal with documents from Tun-huang and Turfan. They are as follows: Ikeda On, The Land and Tax Systems of Tun-huang (Tonka ni okeru dochi zeiyaku sei 0 megutte); Otsu Taru, Two Restored Pieces of Turfan Documents in the Otani Collection (Otani Torohan monjo fukugen Originally published in Shigaku zasshi 100.5 (1991), 821-28. Tsuji Masahiro is a member of the Research Institute of Humanistic Sciences, Kyoto University. 167 Lee: S2 Summary 1990 nidai): Oda Yoshihisa, The Connections between the Otani Documents and the Turfan Documents (Otani monjo to Torohan monjo no kanren ni tsuite); Dohi Yoshikazu, The Land Grant Documents under the Equal-Field System of the T'ang from Tunhuang (Todai Tonko kindensei no dendo kyiiju monjo ni tsuite); Nakamura Hiroichi, The Chronology of the Fragments of the T' ang Administrative Code Discovered at Tunhuang (Tonko hakken To koshikirei zankan no seisaku nendai ni tsuite); Funagoe Yasuji, A Memorandum on the T'ang Household Registers Discovered at Turfan (Torohan shutsudo Tooai koto monjo oboegaki); Yamane Kiyoyuki, The Sale of Slaves in the T' ang and Transaction Documents (Todai no nuhi baibai to jikan). Ikeda's paper surveys the land and tax systems at Tunhunag from the time of Tibetan rule in the late eighth century. It also introduces some previously unknown documents. Ikeda also published in 1990 A Compendium of the Prefaces to Earlier Chinese Manuscripts (Chiigoku kodai shahon shikigo shuroku). This is a monumental study that brings together the shih-yu ~ ~g,or prefaces attached to manuscript editions, between the Three Kingdoms period and the early Northern Sung. This study is a result of Ikeda's many years' efforts and will undoubtedly be an invaluable companion for researchers on the period in question. The first half of Otsu's paper supplements his earlier restoration of the documents discovered at Anpera in Turfan, bearing the dates of 678 and 679; it is based on the research of Ch' en Kuo-ts' an and on two other pieces of documents discovered at Astana. The second half of this paper elaborates others' restorations of the documents of 676 and 678. A more detailed version of the first half of this paper was later published as Supplements to the T'ang Finance Documents of 678 and the Treasury Tallies of 679 (To Giho sannen takushi sosho, yonnen kinpu shifu hoko), Tiiyi5shikenkyii *~¥ ~ li1f Jt 49.2. Otsu notes that many of the extant T'ang finance documents were related to military matters and, on the basis of his analysis of the expenditures on grazing lands and of the regulations..." @default.
