This study explores the effects on the domestic foodscape—the physical built environment of home including its contents—primarily during the 1950s, when rural Irish households were in the midst of transformations to the visual, material and spatial experiences of the kitchen brought on by new foods and/or technologies. The life-changing potential of this modernised environment was acknowledged by certain influential public agents such as the Electricity Supply Board of Ireland, the Irish Department of Agriculture, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, and the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, and they actively sought to ameliorate housing conditions in order to address quality-of-life issues, contribute to agricultural productivity and help to curb the flow of emigration. This modernisation strategy necessarily took into account certain proclivities in terms of food choices or preparation methods as well as wider cultural practices that were deeply embedded in Irish everyday life.
