- W4301886384 abstract "Although pregnant women should avoid taking any unnecessary medications, women with asthma must often continue drug therapy throughout pregnancy to maintain effective control of asthma symptoms and avoid fetal hypoxia, which raises concerns about the fetal risks associated with asthma medications. Reliance on pregnancy categories to determine the teratogenic risk of asthma medications can lead to inadequate risk/benefit considerations. Physicians and other health care practitioners must be knowledgeable about how drugs, in general, influence embryonic development so that exposures that might harm the fetus can be avoided in the case of intended exposures, or that appropriate risk counseling can be provided in the case of inadvertent exposures. Teratogenic risk counseling requires a thorough understanding of the principles of teratology and careful evaluation of animal and clinical teratology studies." @default.
