- W4301903198 abstract "The cervical cap, similar to the diaphragm, is a small latex rubber cup that fits over the cervix and stays in place by suction; since a small amount of spermicide is placed inside the cap, it acts as both a barrier method and a chemical method of contraception. When the cap is used correctly and consistently, the failure rate may be as low as 6% per year; however, the failure rate is typically as high as 18% per year. Use of the cap permits spontaneity, since it is inserted in advance of intercourse, and since spermicide does not have to be reapplied for repeated acts of intercourse. The systemic effects of hormonal methods of contraception are not present. Insertion and removal of the cap become easier with practice. The cap should be left in place for at least 8 hours after intercourse. The maximum time it can be left in place is 48 hours. Some women experience discomfort while using the cap, and some men and women are allergic to the spermicide. There may be a detectable odor associated with the cap. A prescription is required, and a doctor or a nurse practitioner who is trained to fit the cap (not all are) must be consulted. Some women do not fit any of the 4 available sizes. Women should be refitted after childbirth. Women with uterine prolapse or vaginal relaxation can use a cap; women who are allergic to rubber (latex) should not." @default.
