- W4302330543 abstract "The discovery by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration of the first source of high-frequency gravitational waves (GW), GW150914, depicting the coalescence of two stellar black holes, heralded the birth of a new era of exploration of the universe and led to a paradigm shift in our understanding of the collapse of very massive stars. Astrophysical black holes come in two different flavors: stellar and supermassive black holes . The GW Universe comprises a variety of discrete sources and of astrophysical and cosmological backgrounds. The chapter reviews the outcome of current studies on the dynamics of massive black holes in merging galaxies highlighting the role of stars and gas in ruling their path towards coalescence. A new, golden era of exploration of the universe has started, following the detection of the first signal from the cosmos by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo Collaboration." @default.
