- W4302355051 abstract "The effect of the infra-red radiation environment on the heat loss of sheep was determined by exposing 2 sheep in 2 respiration chambers in which the air velocities and distributions were the same, but which had different wall emissivities in the infra-red. It was found that the radiative conductance was 109 kcal/m2.24 hr. °C. for one sheep, and 99 kcal/m2.24 hr. °C. for another. Radiative conductance was unaffected by fleece length. The convective conductances were 113 and 114 kcal/m2.24 hr. °C. The results of previous experiments made in respiration chandlers or climatic rooms were then generalized to provide a prediction equation enabling externalinsulation to be predicted from a knowledge of fleece thickness, air velocity, mean infra-red radiative conductance, and solar radiation intensity. External insulation was measured in 114 experiments made out-of-doors, under a variety of conditions of air temperature, air velocity, rainfall and solar radiation. The agreement between these observations and those predicted from measurements of environmental components using the above equation was good. The insulation of fleece and hair coats is discussed." @default.
