- W4302776963 abstract "Researchers at the Franklin Institute Research Laboratories in Philadelphia have devised a method for the transcervical introduction of liquid silicone into the fallopian tubes for the purpose of contraception (blockage of both ova and sperm). The instrument developed, the cornuosalpingoguide, consists of a flexible, 20-cm long, catheter-type device with a removable obturator tip, which can be remotely controlled by the physician. Television fluoroscopy could visualize the filling of the tubes. The device, though yet to be tested clinically, has brought about effective contraception in laboratory animals. 8 rabbits were mated 2 weeks after the withdrawal of silicone plugs. 2 rabbits became pregnant, each giving birth to 1 normal offspring. A much higher fertility rate would be expected after a longer period of recovery from surgery to remove the silicone plug. Advantages of the technique using the cornuosalpingoguide include contraceptive efficacy, potential reversibility, economy, and no requirement of continuing effort by the patient after blockage has been effected." @default.
