Many do not identify with the umbrella term “transgender” but instead with such options as “nonbinary,” “gender diverse,” or “gender fluid.” Although a survey cannot list all possible terms, researchers may be able to increase the accuracy of their results by offering a range of response options that are developed in collaboration with youth advisors and then tested and validated among broader youth populations.
