- W4304631636 abstract "ObjectivesThe objective of this presentation is to summarize patterns of contemporary video game (VG) play among youth, relevant mental health effects, characteristics of problematic gaming, and appropriate clinical interventions.MethodsThe VG titles most relevant to youth in 2022 will be described in detail using video clips. Effects of VG play on aggressive behavior, sleep, attention, cognitive skills, and academic performance will be reviewed, based on summaries of ongoing serial literature reviews, incorporating the authors’ clinical experience. Assessment and treatment of pathological play habits will be discussed, including the most common clinical dilemmas.ResultsVGs have become the preferred medium of play for modern youth. A sizable body of literature documents the extent, characteristics, and effects of VG play on the mental health of children and adolescents. VGs displace both healthy and unhealthy activities. Aggressive children prefer violent VGs, and excessive VG exposure may exacerbate behavioral problems. Persistent engagement in heavy gaming despite negative consequences can represent a pathological habit called internet gaming disorder, which is associated with deficits in functioning, social anxiety, depression, insomnia, and academic failure. Certain mental health conditions predispose youth to engage in problematic VG play, which may be assuaged by treatment. VGs played in moderation provide benefit to specific cognitive skills and abilities.ConclusionsResearch reveals the effects of VG play on the psychological well-being of youth, including the long-term risks and benefits. Individual characteristics, circumstances of play, and VG content may mediate these effects. Screening for and addressing problematic VG play are vital in contemporary psychiatric practice.MED, RF, DEV ObjectivesThe objective of this presentation is to summarize patterns of contemporary video game (VG) play among youth, relevant mental health effects, characteristics of problematic gaming, and appropriate clinical interventions.
