Parmi les 101 soignants ayant participé à l’enquête, plus d’un tiers déclarait être confronté à la DAI au moins une fois par semaine. Peu de soignants connaissent l’intégralité du tableau clinique. Le questionnaire révélait des lacunes dans la prise en charge préventive et curative de la DAI pour une majorité de soignants. Plus de la moitié d’entre eux reconnaissait des difficultés à diagnostiquer mais également à prendre en charge une DAI. Quatre-vingt-quinze pour cent des soignants interrogés étaient demandeurs de formations et de protocoles de soins spécifiques à la DAI afin d’améliorer la prise en charge de leurs patients. Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) is a frequent pathology, difficult to diagnose and too often overlooked. It is an inflammation of the epidermis secondary to prolonged exposure of the perineal and anal regions to urine and/or stools. The pathophysiology makes hospitalized geriatric patients a population particularly at risk for IAD. Caregivers and geriatric nurses are on the front line in the preventive and curative care of IAD. A questionnaire comprising 18 closed questions was submitted to the nursing staff of a Parisian geriatric hospital in order to assess their knowledge and practices concerning this pathology. Among the 101 caregivers who participated in the survey, more than a third said they were confronted with IAD at least once a week. Few caregivers were acquainted with the full clinical presentation. The questionnaire revealed gaps in the preventive and curative management of IAD for a majority of caregivers. More than half of them recognized difficulties in diagnosing and also in managing IAD.
