- W4306177798 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Among children 12 to 19 years old, the severely obese is the fastest growing group. Obesity has been linked to progression of comorbid conditions (such as diabetes and hypertension) and cardiovascular disease in childhood. Early operative intervention with a long-term multidisciplinary approach has been effective in treating childhood obesity and obesity-related comorbidity. METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective cohort study of the adolescent bariatrics program at a large, urban institution between December 2009 and January 2021. Outcomes included excess BMI loss (EBMIL), short-term and long-term morbidity and mortality, and obesity-related metabolic parameters. RESULTS: Of the 100 patients, 84 underwent sleeve gastrectomy, 14 underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), and 2 underwent conversion to RYGB. Average EBMIL was 57.4%. When broken down in follow-up time intervals, the EBMIL was 19.6% (n = 100) after 1 month, 58% (n = 97) after 6 months, 62.1% (n = 82) after 1 year, 57.7% (n = 57) after 3 years, and 53.9% (n = 24) after 5 years (Fig. 1). There were 8 emergency department visits, mostly due to postoperative intolerance and nausea, 4 of which required hospital admission for rehydration and further workup. One of the 4 patients required ICU admission due to severe acute kidney injury from underlying focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Four patients had long-term operative complication, including stricture, marginal ulcer, dumping syndrome, and gastritis.Figure 1CONCLUSION: Bariatric surgery among adolescents is an effective and safe intervention in the treatment of obesity. Emphasis should be placed on continued engagement with these patients to minimize weight recidivism in the long run." @default.
