- W4306178812 abstract "Mass transport via magma and fluids in the Earth takes place through cracks and percolation through channels along grain boundaries. Percolation is the principal mechanism at depths greater than a few km where rock strength cannot support open cracks. Percolation is linked to permeation, which, in turn, is governed by rock porosity. Finally, porosity is linked to wetting angles, θ, at the interface between melt and fluid and mineral surfaces of surrounding rocks. The wetting angle depends on composition of crystals, melts, and fluids as well as temperature and pressure. For isotropic crystals in a hydrostatic environment, with θ < 60°, fluid or melt will wet all grain boundaries, whereas when greater than 60°, melts and fluids do not. With anisotropic crystal structures or multiple different crystals in contact with melt or fluid, the wetting angles for individual crystal surfaces depend on the properties of the specific surfaces contacting with melt or fluid. Here, the focus is how wetting angles are linked to porosity and permeability and how such information can be employed to model mass transport via liquid (magma and fluid) movement through the Earth from the earliest core-forming processes to modern magmatic activity." @default.
