Large-scale energy storage systems can support smart grids by helping to balance energy supply with demand. Several energy storage technologies already exist, and others are currently in research and development. Techno-economic appraisals provide key insights for engineers, developers, and investors regarding the economic viability of projects. The techno-economic appraisal of energy storage systems is complex and includes economic, technical, and financing factors. This chapter focuses on large-scale energy storage techno-economic appraisal. First, the chapter summarizes how smart grids can benefit from large-scale energy storage technologies. Second, from the investor’s perspective, the financial model for techno-economic appraisal of energy storage systems will be presented and discussed.
