- W4306251946 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Promoting well-being during surgical training is critical for creating a sustainable surgeon workforce; yet focus on wellness is often controversial. Surgeons’ underlying perceptions about wellness are poorly understood. The objective of this study was to explore conceptions of wellness among surgical residents, faculty, and leadership. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with leadership, faculty, residents, and staff during site visits to 15 surgical residency programs. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, then coded using deductive logic to identify content conceptualizing wellness. Transcripts were then analyzed independently using inductive logic and constant comparative approach, with discrepancies reconciled by consensus. RESULTS: The data suggest that accurate conceptions of wellness generated more constructive interventions. One resident remarked, “The problem is that programs put tons of resources into gyms and yoga...It misses the mark.” Misconceptions identified included: (1) poor wellness results from personal weakness; (2) wellness can be achieved with one-size-fits-all interventions; (3) wellness competes with surgical education; (4) resident wellness competes with faculty wellness; (5) wellness can’t be measured; and (6) obstacles to resident wellness are insurmountable. Interviews revealed compelling reconceptualization of each misconception. CONCLUSION: Misconceptions of wellness may result in misguided wellness interventions that disillusion residents. Poor faculty buy-in that is based on misconceptions of wellness may underpin their loss of engagement with the program, further disadvantaging resident wellness. Aligning conceptualizations about wellness may generate more robust well-being initiatives within surgical residency programs." @default.
