- W4306252008 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Using a national concurrent mixed-methods survey, we sought to elicit and compare the experiences of practicing male and female FACS as they relate to differences in each gender’s experiences with career aspirations, gender-based discrimination, mentor-mentee relationships, perceived barriers, and ideas for progress. As a secondary objective, differences between male/female FACS and female members of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) were also compared. METHODS: In January−June 2020, a randomly-selected 3:1 sample of male/female FACS were emailed a link to an anonymous electronic-survey. Female AWS members were emailed in May 2020. Quantitative responses were analyzed using non-response-weighted descriptive statistics that accounted for known differences in all potential respondents’ surgical-specialty, geographic-location, and years-in-practice. Qualitative-responses were analyzed using grounded-theory. RESULTS:N = 1,070 female (response-rate: 42.8%) and 2,860 male (38.1%) FACS were included. Demographic characteristics were similar among FACS, with the notable exception that female FACS were less likely to be married (67.3% vs 89.5%, p < 0.001) and have children (61.7% vs 90.9%, p < 0.001). Members of both genders acknowledged positive and negative aspects of dealing with gender in a professional setting, including shared experiences of gender-based harassment, discrimination, and blame (Table). Moving forward, female FACS emphasized the importance of avoiding competition among female surgeons. They encouraged male surgeons to acknowledge gender-bias and admit their potential role. Male FACS encouraged male and female surgeons to treat everyone the same.CONCLUSION: Experiences with gender are not limited to female surgeons. The results emphasize the importance of recognizing the voices of all stakeholders involved and promoting quality improvement/surgical education initiatives that enhance inclusion through open and honest discourse." @default.
