- W4306316805 abstract "On October 25, 2021, Blue Origin and Sierra Space announced their plans to develop and deploy a commercially owned and operated space station in Low Earth orbit (LEO) called Orbital Reef. This commercial station will be developed with supporting team members Boeing, Redwire Space, Genesis Engineering Solutions, Amazon/Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the Arizona State University. Orbital Reef’s business plan includes providing all the necessary services and amenities required by researchers, manufacturers, and visitors alike, including space transportation and logistics, space habitation, equipment accommodations, and operations by an onboard crew. The team plans to have the Orbital Reef baseline configuration operational in 2027. Its key elements and capabilities will include the following: (1) station utilities, large-diameter central core module, and the reusable New Glenn heavy lift launch vehicle provided by Blue Origin; (2) the Large Integrated Flexible Environment (LIFE) module, small-diameter node module, and the Dream Chaser spaceplane for personnel and cargo delivery provided by Sierra Space, and (3) station operations, research module, and Starliner crew spacecraft provided by Boeing. Expertise in the areas of microgravity research, development and manufacturing, single person spacecraft operations, logistics/networking and research advisory services and public outreach will be provided by Redwire Space, Genesis Engineering Solutions, Amazon/AWS, and Arizona State University, respectively. Orbital Reef will demonstrate that it can fly payloads and people routinely, safely, and affordably to and from LEO to serve both government and commercial markets. Beyond traditional markets that are currently served by the International Space Station, Orbital Reef is positioned to play a key role in future space exploration beyond LEO. This paper will discuss the ongoing plans and technology development efforts currently underway for Orbital Reef and how these efforts could serve lunar and Mars exploration going forward. It will also put this in the context of the larger commercial space markets it plans to serve." @default.
