The article provides an overview of pedagogical ideas and methodological techniques reflected in Russian textbooks on the French language published in the XVIII ‒ first half of the XIX centuries. One of the first methodological manuals for teachers of a foreign language is analyzed. The significance of the pedagogical heritage of educational books on the French language for pedagogy and methods of foreign language teaching is revealed. A parallel is drawn between the functions performed by the educational literature of the period of the Russian Enlightenment and modern textbooks." @default.
