- W4307716829 abstract "Trophic cascades are often used as a justification for rewilding large carnivores, with the idea that they will have positive, trickle-down effects for plants and other species. This chapter aims to clarify trophic cascades first as an ecological phenomenon, and second as a conservation tool. The authors review the evidence of trophic cascades across ecosystems and focus in on large carnivore-induced trophic cascades and the classic example of wolf reintroduction into Yellowstone. Although trophic cascades have been shown across ecosystems, there is mixed evidence for their occurrence in large carnivores and for wolf-induced trophic cascades in Yellowstone. The authors suggest that the ecology of trophic cascades mean that their effects are context-dependent, controlled by factors such as predator behaviour, antipredator defences, and temporal/spatial heterogeneity. This calls into question whether large carnivore reintroduction can be guaranteed to be useful as a tool to cause trophic cascades, because human impacts such as land degradation may outweigh positive benefits gained from trophic cascades. Although reintroduced large carnivores are likely to impact ecosystems, their impact will be determined largely by human impacts, and as such, outcomes can be novel and unexpected. Therefore, the authors suggest that other conservation rationales could be used as drivers of large carnivore reintroductions as further evidence is collected on the ubiquity of trophic cascades." @default.
