I was a broke graduate student, but I knew the knowledge he had just imparted on me was worth more than I could ever repay, so I just wanted him to let me pay the check. I imagine now, he must have chuckled to himself on the inside, but he simply looked at me intensely and said, “just be excellent, that’s all you owe.” I smiled and agreed, but I still felt guilty on the inside because, as I later learned, my understanding of excellence at that time was rooted in a definition constructed by my oppressor. Undenounced to me, I would go on to spend a significant amount of my career unpacking and redefining excellence as a means to achieve success. On this journey, I discovered what Dr. White already knew, which is that my excellence truly was the greatest repayment I could ever offer, and it is what I owed to my ancestors. In this chapter, I redefine excellence from a social justice framework and offer practical strategies for utilizing the pursuit of excellence as a means to make smart and strategic career decisions, to identify viable opportunities and to create them where they do not exist, and to be uncompromising about maintaining joy as a critical part of your journey." @default.
