- W4307977578 abstract "The plant Pereskia aculeata Miller from the Cactaceae family is known in Brazil as ora-pro-nobis. Its cultivation around churches is the origin of its Latin common name. P. aculeata is distributed in the American continent, south and south-east Africa, and north-east and south-east Australia. In Brazil, it occurs in from the south to the north-east and central-west regions. The leaves are the main edible part of the plant, but the flowers and fruit are also eaten. The origin of its use may be related to the African slaves in Brazil. Nutritional analyses of the leaves highlight the content of proteins and essential amino acids, dietary fibre, mucilage, vitamins, iron and other minerals. The secondary metabolites identified in the leaves of P. aculeata are benzoic acid derivatives, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, carotenoids, an indole alkaloid and phenethylamines. No secondary metabolites were identified in other plant parts. P. aculeata has shown important bioactivities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antinociceptive, antibacterial and trypanocidal actions, as well as cytotoxicity in tumour cell lines. The phenolic compounds and carotenoids may be responsible for the antioxidant activity of its leaf extracts. The wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties of the species have been investigated because these actions are related to uses in Brazilian traditional medicine. The wound-healing action was observed both in vitro and in vivo. The chronic and acute topical anti-inflammatory action of P. aculeata was demonstrated in mice. Considering these results, a pharmaceutical cream based on a hexane fraction of P. aculeata methanol leaf extract was developed for use in wound healing. Its leaf flour may be used as an ingredient for food enrichment and its mucilage as a thickening, gelling or emulsifying agent. Other important technological applications have been described in publications in the areas of materials and nanotechnology." @default.
