- W4308104969 abstract "This chapter examines the central place John Calvin affords to the moral laws of God in his discussions on government. His account of law appears against a backdrop where God’s sovereign rule has already been firmly established. This is textually apparent in the order of treatment. Calvin’s account of law constitutes the second part of his discussion of civil government in the Institutes of the Christian Religion (1559). The chapter begins by detailing different aspects of Calvin’s account of moral law and specifying which aspects the Reformer intended for application by civil governments. Here, we see which laws Calvin viewed as applicable for Christians and non-Christians, respectively. In his exposition, Calvin takes great pains to identify the separation between spiritual and civil laws which intimates his thorough understanding of the severe implications of any conflation of positive and normative norms. The Reformer goes on to identify moral laws with the substantive principles as contained in the “the perpetual rule of love.” This law of love is both paramount and foundational. The chapter concludes with a detailed treatment of Calvin’s distinct yet related accounts of natural law, equity, and moral law, and in so doing, reveals how the Reformer’s nuanced understanding of law provides a rich ground for founding a legal system based on the principles of love." @default.
