- W4308221433 abstract "Biological agents (bioagents) are microorganism (bacteria, viruses, fungus) or products from an organism (biological toxins) that can be used for malicious purposes such as: biological warfare (biowarfare), biological terrorism (bioterrorism), and biological crime (biocrime). Furthermore, microorganisms have been accidentally released from facilities – bioaccidents, resulting in biosafety concerns. Bioagents are widespread in the environment and there are legitimate uses of bioagents in industry, medical/academic research, pathology etc. The use of bioagents has a long history from 1650 BCE to present day examples. New and novel technologies for the genetic engineering of bioagents, such as synthetic biology and CRISPR-Cas, may enable people with the required technical skills to manipulate bioagents for higher pathogenicity, to introduce drug resistance, or to produce toxins. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of bioagents agents and their history of use." @default.
