- W4308486948 abstract "Removal of trace organic contaminants (TOrCs) is important for treatment of contaminated water and decreasing the associated risks. Ozonation is one of the most commonly applied technology for the removal of TOrCs, but may increase complexity and pose other risks because it generates oxidation byproducts (OBPs). Although the need for risk assessment of OBPs is universally recognized as essential, to date, quantitative information and qualitative reactions of harmful OBPs have not been adequately summarized. Toxic OBPs are commonly observed during ozonation of various TOrCs, and the toxicity varies with the efficiency of TOrCs removal. As the TOrCs removal rate increases from 50% to 90%, the probability of generating OBPs with higher toxicity decreases from 46.7% to 38.9%. Primary OBPs are generally less toxic than the parent TOrCs, except for those generated by carbonylation of benzene rings and heterocyclic rings. In addition to primary OBPs, low molecular weight aldehydes are also of concern as they show higher toxicity than their parent TOrCs and primary OBPs. Assimilable OBPs, which can be assimilated by microorganisms, form readily during ozonation and induce a 42% possibility of the assimilability increasing five times compared with the assimilability before ozonation. Assimilable OBPs formation is usually independent to O3 or ·OH oxidation trends, but some of these OBPs (e.g., oxalic acids) accumulate more at elevated ozone doses. It is advisable to follow ozonation with a biological treatment method to reduce the potential risk of biological toxicity and microorganism proliferation. Relevant mechanistical studies should be conducted in further investigations." @default.
