- W4308587315 abstract "In Europe, a far higher proportion of females with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) appear to have been infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in adolescence than males. HIV infection most probably occurred during adolescence for both males and females alike since rates of progression from seroconversion to AIDS are believed to be similar for both sexes. A partial explanation is that females are more likely than males to report having had heterosexual contact with high risk partners such as injecting drug users. The number of people diagnosed with AIDS increases steadily with age among adolescents and people in their twenties. The sustained annual increase in the number of AIDS diagnosis, continuing into the 1990s among people aged 25-29 years reflects in part a corresponding annual increase in exposure to HIV among adolescents in the early 1980s. In many respects the epidemiological characteristics of AIDS among adolescents and young adults seen in the UK reflect those seen in all Europe." @default.
