- W4308785023 abstract "R.J.B. Bosworth, known for his accessible social history of Fascist Italy and his biography of Benito Mussolini, has written what he calls ‘My Last Book.’ In the long acknowledgements section, Bosworth discusses some of his career highlights, for instance his recent addition to the editorial board of the Nuova Rivista Storica. The blurb promises ‘a pioneering account’ that ‘charts Mussolini’s leadership in reaction to Hitler’. Bosworth states in an unfortunate sentence that he has ‘never wanted to offer the final solution to this or that issue from the past’ (p. 315). The key theme of the book is that the swift and violent rise of the Nazis and the establishment of the Third Reich in 1933/4 stripped Fascist Italy and the Duce from the pole position of European far-right dictatorships, both in terms of ideological influence and military-diplomatic power. Bosworth is irritated about the alleged ‘endless fascination with the German Führer’ (p. 31). He insists, without developing his point persuasively, that the history of Mussolini and Fascist Italy offers more relevant insights into ‘our present woes and opportunities’ (p. 31). The author states that the ascendancy of the Third Reich, with which Italy entered into a formal alliance in 1939 after a warming up of relations since 1936, led Mussolini to ‘pursue a populist approach’. This approach featured war-mongering language at home and territorial expansionism. Bosworth concludes that it was Mussolini, rather than Hitler, who served as a precedent for right-wing dictators. Bosworth follows the current tendency to link fascism with populism, a popular genre since at least the election of US President Donald Trump in 2016. ‘Populism’ remains a nebulous concept throughout the book, and it would have been rewarding for the author to engage with the complexities of populism outlined in the recent literature." @default.
