- W4308791834 abstract "Cyanobacteria are the Earth's oldest oxygenic prokaryotes (evolved > 2.5 bya), oxygenating the biosphere and creating conditions for evolution and diversification of O 2 -requiring prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Cyanobacteria are found in soils, surficial habitats, and water bodies, spanning polar and tropical climates, as individual cells and colonies and endosymbionts. They have “seen” major geochemical and climatic changes over their long evolutionary history and today thrive as dense “blooms,” promoted by anthropogenic nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) enrichment. Cyanobacterial blooms are a major cause of water quality and habitat degradation, as they can produce secondary metabolites toxic to biota ranging from invertebrate grazers to fish, mammals, and man. Blooms emit foul odors and tastes and cause oxygen depletion of impacted waters. Mitigating the global expansion of toxic cyanobacterial harmful blooms (CyanoHABs) is a major challenge facing researchers and water resource managers. Various approaches including nutrient load reduction, artificial mixing and flushing, omnivorous fish removal, algaecide applications, and sediment dredging have been used as mitigation steps. However, we now face the additional challenge of addressing the effects of climate change. Rising temperatures, increasing frequencies, and magnitudes of extreme weather events, including tropical cyclones, extra-tropical storms, floods, and droughts, promote CyanoHAB growth potentials and influence the efficacy of ecosystem mitigation measures. These climatic changes will likely require setting stricter nutrient reduction targets for bloom control in impacted waters. In addition, the efficacy of currently used methods to reduce CyanoHABs will need to be re-evaluated in light of the synergistic effects of climate change and nutrient enrichment." @default.
