- W4308793479 abstract "UV disinfection depends on the ability of the process to inactivate microbial and viral pathogens; the term “inactivation” refers to any process that brings about changes in the structure or composition of a pathogen that prevents its replication in a host, such as a human. When this objective is met, infection can be prevented. To address this issue, the fundamental principles of microbiology that define the mechanisms of microbial and viral inactivation (i.e. photochemical damage to nucleic acids and proteins), as well as the analytical methods that are applied for assessment of disinfection efficacy are presented. Descriptions of the processes by which pathogens accomplish replication and infection are also summarized. This informs an understanding of the selection of analytical methods that are used to quantify microbial and viral responses to UV irradiation. It also provides background to understand the implications of selecting an inappropriate analytical method for characterizing UV disinfection efficacy; important historical examples of incorrect method selection are presented and discussed in the context of their effects on the application of UV disinfection systems. Microbiological methods that are described include culture-based assays for bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, as well as methods from the field of molecular biology, especially those that involve polymerase chain reaction (PCR)." @default.
