- W4308969659 abstract "Polymer electrolyte membrane-based fuel cells (PEMFCs), involving polymeric ion exchange membranes (PIEMs) as the key components, are dominating the field of fuel cell technology. The technology is developing fast but PIEMs are becoming the bottleneck. A number of technical challenges in the development of PIEMs need to be addressed including conductivity and mechanical property enhancement, increase of chemical stability and durability, and cost reduction, which are directly associated with the structure and morphology of polymeric membrane. To address this challenge, radiation grafting (RG) method could be a useful tool to fabricate PIEMs, capable of critically designing the membranes providing better tunability between the base polymer and the grafted monomers with required ionic groups responsible for ion exchange. This method acts as a powerful technique to develop both proton-exchange membranes (PEMs), with selective permeability for cations, and anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), with selective permeability for anions. RG technique is a fast technique that offers a cleaner, cheaper, and efficient way of producing ion exchange membranes with high grafting values, devoid of catalytic contamination and initiators. The present chapter summarizes the different types of PIEMs that have been developed through RG techniques for fuel cell applications, and performance assessment of recently developed radiation-grafted proton and alkaline exchange membranes." @default.
