- W4309220320 abstract "In a 1965 piece, Pasolini dismisses Pound’s use of Dante in his work. Exploring how he and Pound engage with a similar tradition—from the Greco-Roman classics to a Medieval Romance canon—this chapter argues that there is greater affinity in their use of the past than Pasolini’s judgement implies. The first section examines the role played by the Provençal tradition in their early pursuit of a poetic idiom closer to an idea of natural speech to overcome a post-Symbolist ‘crisis’ of diction. Translation, in its different forms, provides a way to invent and circulate a tradition able to accommodate their own work within it. Probing a shared ambivalence towards philological practice, the final section analyses the implications of their appropriative and ‘barbaric’ methodologies." @default.
