- W4309263310 abstract "Paper describes statistical models to find out extreme values of lightning return strokes peak current. Elektroinštitut Milan Vidmar runs the lightning location system SCALAR since 1998. The system has since then detected 0.0098% of lightning return strokes with current amplitude higher than 200 kA. A focus of research was protection of critical infrastructure with new legislation requirement which dictates lightning protection design to cover lightning return strokes currents with occurrences more then 99% of probability propagation of peak lightning current amplitude. This requires dealing with extreme peak amplitude values of lightning current. Appling such criteria with great confidence turns out to be problematic since extreme peak amplitude values of lightning current and their energy may not have prior history, i.e., are not known or validated in advance. Therefore, we formulated several novel mathematical models that simulate extreme values of lightning currents amplitude on basis of detected lightnings data distribution from system SCALAR. Main objective of newly developed models was to calculate maximum peak lightning current amplitude and their statistical occurrence with return periods of 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 years. Four different mathematical models have been tested and compared with statistical analyses. In the second part of the paper, we investigate the maximum intensity of lightning return strokes in 24 hours, limited to area of interest, or location in region where critical infrastructure resides. For example, what is the maximum number of lightning return strokes in 24 hours within 500 m radius area. Additional method was developed to systematically search lightning return strokes on a larger area of 20.000 km <sup xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML xmlns:xlink=http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink>2</sup> region within specified 24-hour time window from the database which have more than 5 million lightning return strokes." @default.
