- W4309298323 abstract "Much has been written about what principals need to do to improve the quality of teaching, learning and leading in schools. Although some of this literature acknowledges the intimacy of the relationship between the personal and professional lives of leaders, to a significant extent this pivotal dynamic is ignored or underplayed in principle preparation programmes, and in their ongoing professional learning, a considerable lacuna in their initial and ongoing formation. Drawing on Foucault's concept of ethics and empirical data from school leaders, this chapter argues that by paying appropriate attention to the “public” and “shadow” persona of leaders, a degree of moral integration is achieved between what leaders stand for, their values and beliefs, while seeking out legitimate compromises as they grapple with aspects of the policy environment. Through this process of enfolding, or “subjectification,” the ethical work of leaders is enabled in a more coherent and sustainable manner, and through this process of ongoing formation, professionally responsible leadership is forged, lending legitimacy to both resistance and transformation. The chapter concludes that the nature of this intimate relationship needs considerably more attention in the ongoing formation of leaders." @default.
