- W4309301359 abstract "Twenty-first century technologies pose new challenges for the decades-old media literacy education. With the increasing prevalence of stealth marketing, mis- and disinformation, polarization online and offline, microtargeting and clickbait, educators are faced with new questions about how to teach about the media ecosystem and what to include in their curriculum. In this paper, we review important elements of the contemporary media ecosystem and provide an overview of the history of media literacy. We then define literacy and media literacy before highlighting the various sub-disciplines of media literacy that have branched out to focus on a particular media form or approaches to media literacy. Although the various branches of media literacy focus on different media forms, they nonetheless share similar progressions in their development as well as future challenges. We conclude by outlining the key challenges and gaps that media literacy educators, advocates, and researchers must contend with in order for the field to progress both theoretically and in practice. This includes emotional aspects of media and consumption, better understanding and addressing the media literacy needs of marginalized peoples and adults, moving beyond checklists and cognitive approaches to media literacy, and developing more timely ways to engage with the media and information, such as lateral reading or mindfulness." @default.
