- W4309305672 abstract "Face masks, which established a new normal for daily interpersonal relationships when COVID-19 encountered many lives back in 2020 for the first time, became the subject of a large number of scientific studies. Various studies have revealed the effect of face masks on the ability to recognize emotion, highlighting the significance of the upper portion of the face. Nevertheless, less is known about how perceived gaze direction affects one's ability to identify emotions during face mask use. When the visible area is reduced to the eye region, adaptive strategies might have developed to make perception more selective to gaze direction. Here, we explore the effect of perceived gaze direction and face mask on emotion recognition using eye-tracking. We asked 42 participants to identify emotional expressions (i.e., anger, fear, neutral) of the face stimuli with different gaze directions (i.e., direct gaze, averted gaze) and face mask (i.e., mask, no mask) conditions. We found that face masks impaired emotion recognition performance for fearful faces, while it did not impair performance for angry and neutral faces. Regardless of mask condition, we demonstrated that direct gaze contributed to a more accurate and faster recognition of emotion, especially for neutral and angry faces. We argue that pupil dilation indicates cognitive load and correlates with performance and not emotion type during the emotion recognition task. Overall, our results demonstrate that direct gaze increases emotion recognition performance regardless of wearing a face mask, even though viewing masked faces differ in viewing strategies and increase cognitive load." @default.
