- W4309358468 abstract "Acute and chronic scrotal swelling encompasses a vast array of diagnoses. Some diagnoses call for emergency surgical or medical management. Some of these diagnoses can have irreversible impact on long-term male health issues of fertility and androgen production. This chapter emphasizes the most common causes. It also differentiates them by typical age of presentation. After reading this chapter, you will be able to identify the cause and management of various causes of acute and chronic scrotal swelling. The most common causes of scrotal swelling are testicular torsion, torsion of the appendix testis, inguinal hernia/hydrocele, and epididymitis. Immediate surgical correction is mandated for testicular torsion, testicular trauma, and incarcerated inguinal hernias. There is also a long list of uncommon causes of scrotal pathology that are addressed. Consequently, a prompt, careful approach to the evaluation of a swollen, painful, or inflamed scrotum is essential." @default.
