- W4309372237 abstract "Abstract The Union had in 1861 significant opening advantages in competitive knowledge, but still lost the first major battle of the war at First Manassas. By midwar, Union commanders had engineered improved intelligence architectures, yet lost again at Chancellorsville (1863). The discussion in this chapter explores what role intelligence played in key decisions on both sides. Did the South just get lucky, engineer intelligence advantages, or reap the benefits of bad intelligence flowing to decision-makers in the North? The study finds that intelligence failures in Washington and among Union generals handed over advantages that the Confederates fully exploited in both cases. In addition, however, the Confederates also generated intelligence advantages, especially for Generals Joe Johnston and Beauregard at First Manassas, that were probably essential to their success." @default.
