- W4309372442 abstract "Extract The origins and purpose of this book, and the project that it recounts, are explained in the Prologue. Here, therefore, our task is to explain enough about our approach to serve as a sort of users’ guide, and to enable us to thank the many people on whose giant shoulders we have stood while trying to glimpse the horizon beyond which lie truths about badgers and nature more widely. First, what sort of book is this? We will have failed if the answer is not vibrantly clear to readers a couple of pages hence. This is a scientific book, and we expect it to be judged by the high standards of science; we hope it is also enjoyable and accessible to a readership far beyond professional scholars, indeed by anybody with a fascination for nature. Second, what sort of team are we? Chris began as David’s doctoral student at Oxford, and grew into his right hand—a hand without which the Wytham badger project would not have survived. In this sense, as a team should be, we need each other, and so it has been as we have written the results of our 31-year partnership. This shared journey by two people caused us a grammatical hiccup: mostly we have a shared story to tell, and the pronoun ‘we’ captures the reality, but on other occasions we want to write something about each other. The solution is that we sometimes refer to each other by our first names; for example, as Chris observed or as David recalled. Third, our modus operandi deserves brief mention: we have not had the financial or logistical resources, far less the mental capacity, to keep all strands of this project running at full steam for the nearly 50 years about which we write; rather, we have dipped into particular topics for a few intense years, before largely turning to another. Happily, this means we’ve covered a lot of topics; sadly it means we cannot always tie everything together simultaneously." @default.
