- W4309594588 abstract "The Great Nicobar Island is the largest and most isolated island in the Nicobar group of islands, surrounded by the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, and shows similar species affinity to nearby countries, Thailand and Sumatra. The present study documents the diversity and distribution of octocorals in the subtidal coral reef and rocky and sandy regions of the Great Nicobar Islands, with a total of 37 species of octocorals from 6 localities. Among 6 study areas, B. quarry station 1 recorded the highest number of species (21 species), whereas Laxman Beach recorded a low number of species (5 species). The substrate analysis revealed that 35 species were recorded on dead coral, whereas only 8 species were found on sandy substrate. Habit, the geographical distance among study areas and environmental factors play an important role in species similarity among study areas, in which B. quarry station 1 and B. quarry station 2 exhibited strong faunistic affinities (0.72). The study area Laxman Beach was faunistically distant from Gandhi Nagar by showing similarity (0.20)." @default.
