- W4309691625 abstract "One defense of free markets appeals to the beneficial effects that they could have on personal autonomy. A market is free to the degree that those who participate in it are free from restriction. Such restrictions include the prohibition of trade in certain goods or services. They also include regulations imposed on market actors that limit their ability to trade as they desire. These regulations include restrictions on how goods and services are marketed, and requirements concerning the information that must be provided to their purchasers. To the degree that persons are free from such restrictions, it will be they, and not those who would have imposed these restrictions upon them, who will be directing their actions. Persons are autonomous, self-directed, to the degree that they, rather than someone else, direct their actions. Thus, the greater the degree that a person’s economic actions are performed within a free market (and so are free from restrictions imposed by others) the greater the degree to which she will be autonomous with respect to them. But this autonomy-based defense of free markets does not capture the whole story. A defender of autonomy could accept restrictions on markets in two possible cases: Where the presence of certain market opportunities within a person’s choice-set could, if pursued, compromise the ability of persons to exercise their autonomy in the future and to protect the autonomy of some market participants from the actions of others." @default.
