- W4309735829 abstract "Scholars of literature tend to see analogy as tied to its counterpart, metaphor, a literary device used to enrich poetic expression. Scholars in Translation Studies, on the other hand, tend to overlook analogy and instead align translation with metaphor, itself currently a controversial notion in the discipline, which, moreover, also operates on the same one-to-one logic as its counterpart, equivalence. From both points of view, analogy seems interesting, but unworthy of further critical investigation. However, as this paper argues, analogy holds promise for the discipline of Translation Studies and its pedagogy, first, because analogy was designed from the time of Aristotle to be inventive, and second, because analogy was understood by Aristotle’s medieval commentators as endowed with an intermediary nature associated with ambiguity and polysemy. Looking to analogy may allow us to respond more creatively and flexibility to the ever-changing nature of meaning today, not only in the theory and the practice of translation, but also in how we teach both." @default.
