- W4310346567 abstract "Defoliation is an essential pre-harvest practice in the production of machine-harvested cotton, especially in Xinjiang, where cotton mechanical harvesting is limited by remaining green leaves and unopened bolls at harvest time due to the lack of thermal resource and growth duration, thus harvest aids is popularly applied to improve cotton yield and fiber quality. This study aimed to address if mixtures of thidiazuron and ethephon as a new defoliant (harvest aids) could enhance harvest aid efficiency and reduce trash content without loss of yield and fiber quality. We conducted field experiments at two locations with different climate conditions in Xinjiang, China. Four treatments were tested, namely tank mixes of 600 g a.i. ha–1 thidiazuron + 4500 g a.i. ha–1 ethephon (T600 + E4500), 600 + 3000 (T600 + E3000), 450 + 1725 (T450 +E1725) and water control (T0 + E0, control). The number of cotton bolls per plant under defoliant application across two test sites was 15.3 % higher than under the control, however, it did not significantly affect seed cotton yield. No defoliant compounds affected fiber length, strength and uniformity, while micronaire worsened using T600 + E3000 and T600 + E4500 in Luntai. Defoliant application accelerated the boll-opening process, resulting a 8.8 % higher final boll open percentage than the control across two test sites. The defoliation percentage of the three defoliant treatments showed no difference across two sites, and was 22.9 % higher than the water control. Defoliant compounds with T600 + E4500 and T600 + E3000 had more sticking leaves than in T450 + E1725. We concluded that the optimal defoliation compound in Xinjiang was a tank mixture of 450 g ha–1 thidiazuron + 1725 g ha–1 ethephon. Our results would promote cotton mechanical harvesting by enhancing cotton harvest aid efficacy and reducing input without loss of yield and quality." @default.
