- W4310361133 abstract "Indian cancer patients have unmet needs in a range of domains such as financial, emotional/psychological, and informational. This study aimed to explore the unmet needs among Indian cancer patients at different time-points of their cancer trajectory. Indian patients (n = 11; female = 5; mean age = 42.8 years) participated in semi-structured interviews. The time since diagnosis varied from 3 months (n = 3), 6 months (n = 3), 1 year (n = 2), and more than 1 year (n = 3). The interview questions explored patients’ information and supportive care needs which they identified as currently unmet. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Two super-ordinate themes were constructed: (a) “This question won't go away”: Persistent unmet cancer attributions and treatment information needs among patients and (b) different times, different needs: Contrasting unmet needs among patients located at varied time-points in their cancer trajectory. Communication skills training for both patients and physicians to share and address the former's unmet needs is indicated. Further, the findings indicate the need for psycho-oncologists who can speak to the needs of patients at different time-points of the care continuum (e.g., introduce patients early in the treatment trajectory to self-care skills, provide psychological support to patients who were diagnosed for longer than a year)." @default.
