- W4310365036 abstract "The COVID-19 pandemic saw a rise in exclusive nationalisms globally and the lie of the existence of world without others; in South Africa, the pandemic saw the birth of an Afrophobic #PutSouthAfricaFirst social media movement championing a paradigm of difference and abyssal thinking at the expense of co-existence with other beings. While the #PutSouthAfricaFirst movement is labelled as xenophobic by the Center for Analytics and Behavioural Change and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), this article argues that it is inadequate and an act of bad faith to merely claim the movement to be xenophobic while its intentions and actions are a display of Afrophobic xenophobia. The article further investigates why the #PutSouthAfricaFirst movement is only channelling its hatred, disdain, and violence towards black African foreign nationals while exempting other non-African foreigners from the “foreign” tag, thus presenting a number of viable reasons inclusive of historical oppression, the making of the social unconscious, South African exceptionalism, psychological trauma, and alienation amongst other reasons. The article is not oblivious to the number of theses that have been used to explain the xenophobic acts in South Africa; however, these are critiqued in so far as they fail to accommodate the Afrophobic nature of xenophobia evident in the #PutSouthAfricaFirst movement." @default.
