Such molecules, known as molecular biomarkers, can be DNA, RNA, proteins, or metabolites. With the ability to assay quantitatively for the presence of a biomarker, it is easier for the medical community to diagnose a disease state earlier and with greater accuracy. Given the currently high level of sensitivity associated with many molecular assays, biomarker screening has the potential to signal a potential health problem well before the onset of any clinical manifestation. Biomarkers, in general, are not limited to molecules; biomarkers can also be physiological manifestations, such as blood pressure. With early detection come earlier medical intervention and, hopefully, a significantly better prognosis for the patient. It makes perfect sense to investigate the transcriptome for novel biomarkers because it is the RNA expression profile of a cell that drives its phenotype. For this reason, molecular biomarkers are occasionally referred to as “signature molecules.” Well-established RNA biomarkers include sncRNA, lncRNA, lincRNA, and even mRNA. Protein biomarker assays are simply not possible in cases where RNA biomarkers are noncoding transcripts. RNA is easily detectable in the blood as it travels through the circulatory system enclosed in exosomes which protect it from RNase degradation." @default.
