- W4310430037 abstract "Effect of Rod Spacing on Heat Transfer Burnout. Two burnout tests were conducted in the star test section with the surrounding-rod mockup unheated. The burnout heat fluxes were 25% above the burnout heat fluxes measured in 19-rod wire wrapped bundles at Columbia University and over twice the burnout heat fluxes measured at Harford in a 19-rod wire wrapped bundle. The test results are in agreement with the results obthined on a 9-rod bundle at GE-APED in which the rod spacing was maintained by pins as in the star test section. The central heater was destroyed and the surrounding-rod mockup was damaged by an electrical arc that occurred at the end of the second burnout test. Repair of the test section is in progress. Sieve Tray Test. Tests to determine gas and liquid handlirg capacity of sieve trays with segmental downcomers were completed in February. Blower capacity was limited by operation at lower than design pressure but liquid handling capacity was exceeded at normal L/G ratios. In general, flow was limited to a maximum F-factor of 1.55 to 1.60 for stable operation by a flooding cond1tion on the feet' tray, similar in all respects to liquid carryover which has frequently limited operation of SRP first stage cold towers during this season of the year. The results thus far do not clearly deflne the cause of flooding. Tests in March, after installation of downpipes in the downcomer compartment, may clarify the effect of downcomer design. Hydride Orientation and Mechanical Properties of Thin-Walled Zircaloy Tubing. Additional tests of longitudinal specimens at stresses near 32,000 psi produced some reorientation of the hydrides; thus the stress orientation susceptibility in the longitudinal direction must be classified as low but not zero. Preliminary work on hydride location within the Zircaloy matrix showed that in drawn tubing less than 1/4 of the hydride platelets were in the grain boundaries. (auth)" @default.
