- W4310502105 abstract "Many people in the elderly and disabled community need routine monitoring from health care professionals. Though many elderly and disabled people prefer to live independently, the risk of injury or a debilitating medical event progressively increases with age. Nurses may visit people living at home, but the cost is high and privacy is lost. Technology can help balance independence and safety by monitoring key vital signs and issuing alerts for high-risk conditions. The purpose of this project was to develop and test modules for an Internet of Things (IoT) system that would assist nurses and caregivers to monitor elderly or disabled individuals for changes in their vital signs that would indicate higher risk for a medical condition needing attention. A prototype system was developed that consisted of both a patent monitoring device and a web application. The patient monitoring device used a pulse oximeter placed along a major artery on the foot that did not restrict movement and maintained a constant data transmission. The sensor read heart rate (HR) and blood oxygen saturation (SO <inf xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML xmlns:xlink=http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink>2</inf> ). The values were stored in a data warehouse and transmitted to a web application. Within the web application logic, the data values were compared to threshold ranges set by the medical staff, and alerts were raised if the new values were outside of the acceptable ranges. The prototype system was tested, and the results appear promising. A system integrating patient monitoring devices and medical web applications could improve the quality of life for individuals to balance living independently with safety by monitoring of key vital signs." @default.
