- W4310538732 abstract "As this volume makes clear, Helen Neville was one of the most influential and visionary cognitive neuroscientists of her time. Her passion for rigorous science was matched only by her passion for social justice, and she fought societal inequality via numerous avenues. We describe how Helen’s commitment to using critical, evidence-based thinking to address broader societal issues led to a line of applied research in which we developed approaches to improve outcomes for families from lower socioeconomic status backgrounds. We trace the trajectory from basic research on the effects of selective attention on neural processing to intervention research examining the malleability of these processes in preschool-aged children. The resulting two-generation intervention was found to improve outcomes in multiple domains, including brain function for attention in children. We end with a discussion of how Helen’s vision and collaborative research with educators advanced the field of educational neuroscience. In line with Helen’s vision, we argue that cognitive neuroscience represents a valuable tool for understanding the complex interaction between experience, neuroplasticity, and outcomes across development, particularly in the context of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies. Research that embraces this vision has the potential to address issues related to social justice via rigorous science." @default.
