- W4310558180 abstract "Vision impairment resulting from optic neuritis (ON) is one of the earliest clinical presentations of multiple sclerosis (MS), affecting approximately 20% of the patients. ON is characterized by inflammation and degeneration of the optic nerve and retina. Current treatments available for ON are only partially effective and have limited impact on the neuroinflammatory pathology of the disease. Therefore, there is a great need for novel therapies. Animal models are essential for understanding the pathogenesis of optic neuritis and developing potential therapeutic strategies. The experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model is an established rodent experimental of MS. EAE model recapitulates the major pathological features of MS-associated ON. These include axonal degeneration, activation of microglia/macrophages, astrogliosis, demyelination, thinning of the nerve fiber layer, retinal ganglion cell loss, changes in visual acuity, etc. This chapter summarizes how the EAE model can be utilized successfully to assess optic neuritis in rodents." @default.
