Electrochemical synthesis of Si–C systems is at an early stage of development. Attempts have been undertaken to produce Si–C composites by facile electrosynthesis in molten salts using silica and carbon powders as the precursors. Metal silicides are compound semiconductors, which gained attention as materials with excellent optical properties, high hydrogen storage capacity, and superconductivity at certain temperatures and pressures. The band gap of metal silicides could be extended to the visible region by tailoring the elemental composition and the phases. Metal silicides are typically formed by means of reactive deposition epitaxy at high temperatures. Electrochemical methods make a vice versa process possible, that is, Si deposition on a metal substrate." @default.
