- W4310736430 abstract "Background: An initial survey (2021) examining the perceptions and attitudes of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) relating to the COVID-19 pandemic revealed a profound impact of the pandemic on emotional and physical health. Patients experienced interruptions in routine appointments/diagnostic tests and IBD treatment. Patients also worried of increased risks of contracting COVID-19 and developing severe symptoms, leading some to discontinue medication; few, however, reported discussing these concerns with their healthcare professional (HCP). To better understand IBD patient behavior as more information and guidance about COVID19 and IBD became available, we surveyed patients one year later to reassess concerns and behaviors related to COVID-19 and vaccination. Methods: An anonymous 38-question survey was distributed to self-identified Crohn’s disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, aged ≥21 years, living in the United States. The survey was accessed via the social media network MyCrohnsAndColitisTeam.com. Results: The survey was live from June 17 to July 5, 2022, and completed by 378 people (224 CD, 154 UC); most respondents were aged ≥50 years (83% CD, 83% UC) and female (75% CD, 72% UC). Most patients indicated returning to in-person activities, including HCP visits (73% CD, 71% UC), testing/procedure visits (63% CD, 64% UC), and social activities (57% CD, 62% UC), and over half reported no care disruption over the last 6 months (60% CD, 65% UC). Most reported being fully vaccinated (85% CD, 81% UC), having received at least 1 booster (71% CD, 69% UC), and were vaccinated irrespective of vaccine mandates (88% CD, 82% UC). Negative vaccine experiences were not more likely in patients with active versus inactive IBD (CD: active, 80%; inactive, 66%; UC: active, 78%; inactive, 71%). Approximately one-third of respondents reported lingering pandemic-related concerns, such as waning safety precautions (44% CD, 32% UC), the transition of COVID-19 to endemic status (39% CD, 33% UC), emergence of viral variants (39% CD, 31% UC), and duration of vaccine protection (29% CD, 29% UC). Most respondents received COVID-19 information from their HCP (58% CD, 51% UC) and mainstream media [49% CD, 40% UC]). Many reported discussing the vaccine with their HCP before/soon after vaccine approval (82% CD, 72% UC), but few respondents discussed concerns regarding receiving the vaccine while taking IBD medications (29% CD, 27% UC), spacing of IBD medications and vaccination (23% CD, 19% UC), whether vaccination could trigger a flare (23% CD, 30% UC), whether vaccination lessened medication efficacy (22% CD, 16% UC), and whether to continue IBD medications before/after vaccination (18% CD, 19% UC). Over one-third of respondents had lingering questions regarding the vaccine booster, including efficacy against variants (47% CD, 42% UC) and number of boosters needed (40% CD, 37% UC). Conclusion(s): Compared to 2021, results of the 2022 survey demonstrated changing perceptions, concerns, and behavior in IBD patients relating to the COVID-19 virus and vaccination. The high vaccination rate and confidence in returning to in-person activities are likely attributable to dissemination of medical information by HCPs and the media. However, remaining concerns, such as emergence of variants and duration of vaccine protection in a pandemic turning into an endemic situation, underscore the importance of continued communication and education between HCPs (and the scientific community) and patients." @default.
